On a vibrant autumn day in Piazza Castello, Turin, SSAW had the honor of taking part in Portici di Carta 2025, one of Italy’s most beloved literary festivals.
This year, for the third consecutive edition, the festival expanded its horizons through the intercultural initiative “Reading the World – A Literary Journey Across Cultures”, curated by the Intercultural Center of the City of Turin.
The project, realized in collaboration with CODIASCO – Coordinamento delle Diaspore per la Cooperazione Internazionale, brought together writers, readers, and cultural organizations from diverse backgrounds. Its mission: to recognize culture as a fundamental and essential value of the community, a source of economic development and social well-being.
SSAW and the Voice of Migration
Among the highlights of this year’s edition was the presentation of the book
📖 “From the Land of the Serpent God to the C.A.R.A. Milano”,
written and presented by Khalid Abaker, founder of SSAW.
Through his personal narrative, Khalid invited the audience to embark on a profound journey — from his homeland to Italy — tracing experiences of migration, resilience, and belonging. His story resonated deeply with all who listened, shedding light on the challenges and hopes that define the path of those who rebuild their lives far from home.
The presentation was enriched by the presence of members of the representatives of CIDCI – Coordinamento Italiano delle Diaspore per la Cooperazione Internazionale, CODIASCO, Sudanese community in Turin and several cultural associations and friends who continue to support SSAW’s mission of promoting intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding.
Culture as a Bridge
The Reading the World project stands as a testament to the belief that literature is a bridge — one that connects people across languages, histories, and identities.
By sharing stories, we not only exchange experiences but also foster empathy and build communities rooted in respect and curiosity.
SSAW’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to amplifying the voices of migrants and diaspora communities, and to creating spaces where diversity is celebrated as a source of strength and creativity.
Looking Ahead
As SSAW continues to collaborate with cultural institutions, authors, and community networks, we reaffirm our belief that books are tools of transformation. They help us imagine a world where stories are not confined by borders, but rather serve as pathways to understanding and unity.
We thank the organizers of Portici di Carta 2025, the Intercultural Center of Turin, and CODIASCO for this meaningful opportunity — and all the friends and partners who continue to support our shared vision of an inclusive cultural landscape.
