SSAW at Cogestione 2025: Shedding Light on the Silent War in Sudan

We warmly welcome you to SSAW, a global movement dedicated to advocating for human rights, peace, and social justice. SSAW is committed to raising awareness about critical global issues, supporting affected communities, and fostering a culture of solidarity. Our mission is to amplify the voices of those silenced by conflict and humanitarian crises, ensuring that their stories reach the world. Thank you for joining us on this journey toward a more just and peaceful world.

On March 5, 2025, SSAW was honored to participate in Cogestione 2025 under the SSSW – Support Survivors of Sudan War project, which was established at the beginning of the war in Sudan by SSAW – Support Survivors of African War at Liceo Classico G. Parini, engaging in discussions on social justice and human rights. Our session, titled Sudan: The Silent War, was led by Khalid Abaker, who shed light on this crucial yet often overlooked conflict. The discussion delved into the root causes of the war, the lack of international attention, the humanitarian crisis, and possible pathways to resolution. With Sudan experiencing one of the most severe conflicts in recent history, it is vital for global citizens to understand and take action.

The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023, igniting a brutal power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This conflict, rooted in post-2019 political instability following Omar al-Bashir’s removal, has led to immense suffering. The violence has affected Khartoum, Darfur, and other key regions, displacing millions and disrupting entire communities. Despite the scale of devastation, Sudan receives limited media coverage compared to conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Communication blackouts, a declining international presence, and shifting media priorities contribute to the lack of sustained reporting. Global attention is often diverted to conflicts with direct geopolitical stakes for powerful nations, leaving Sudan’s crisis in the shadows.

The war has been shaped by multiple actors, both internal and external. The SAF, led by General Abdel Fatah Al-Burhan, controls key urban centers, while the RSF, under Mohammed Hamdan Dogalo (Hemeti), holds strategic territories and engages in governance efforts. Various international players have influenced the conflict, including Libya, Egypt, the UAE, Russia’s Wagner Group, and Ukraine, each supporting different factions. The struggle for power has intensified due to political instability, economic hardships, and governance failures. Attempts at transitioning to civilian rule have been undermined by rival factions vying for control, deepening the crisis. Economic collapse, resource competition, and widespread corruption have further fueled the conflict, making peace negotiations even more difficult.

The humanitarian impact is staggering. Over 10.6 million Sudanese are displaced, making this the largest displacement crisis in the world. Twenty-five million people require urgent humanitarian assistance, and 18 million face extreme hunger, with five million at famine levels. More than 3.5 million children under five suffer from acute malnutrition, and the healthcare infrastructure is collapsing. Women and children bear the brunt of the suffering, with widespread reports of sexual violence, forced displacement, and atrocities. Despite these dire circumstances, global media coverage remains inconsistent, and international intervention has been insufficient. As basic services become inaccessible and humanitarian aid struggles to reach those in need, urgent action is required to prevent further catastrophe.

Recent developments in February 2025 have further complicated the situation. The RSF declared a Government of Peace and Unity in Kenya, governing areas under its control, while the SAF announced plans for a transitional civilian-led government. The possibility of Sudan splitting into rival administrations raises concerns about prolonged instability. Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations are struggling to operate under dangerous conditions. Doctors Without Borders recently suspended operations in Darfur, leaving 500,000 displaced people without medical assistance. Civilians continue to face extreme hardships as essential supplies dwindle, highlighting the urgency for neutral humanitarian intervention. Without immediate action, the humanitarian crisis will worsen, deepening suffering and instability across the region.

The role of the media and the international community in exposing human rights violations and advocating for peace is crucial. The discussion emphasized the need for increased humanitarian aid, diplomatic pressure, and grassroots advocacy to keep Sudan in global consciousness. Participants explored potential solutions, including raising awareness through social media, supporting relief organizations, and pressuring governments to prioritize Sudan in diplomatic efforts. The crisis demands a global response, and failure to act will result in prolonged suffering and destabilization. Amplifying media coverage and ensuring balanced reporting on Sudan’s war is essential to mobilize public support and international engagement.

To address the crisis, immediate and long-term actions are needed. Increased funding for emergency aid and ensuring unrestricted access to affected areas will help alleviate suffering. Encouraging negotiations between factions and supporting diplomatic efforts to establish a sustainable ceasefire is critical. Supporting Sudanese refugees, professionals, and academics in leadership roles can contribute to long-term stability. International organizations must take proactive measures to mediate peace efforts and provide humanitarian relief. A coordinated global response is necessary to prevent Sudan from becoming a permanently fractured state. The formation of parallel governments underscores the urgency of international engagement to prevent further division and chaos.

Sudan is experiencing one of the largest humanitarian crises in modern history. Without decisive action, the situation will continue to deteriorate, leaving millions vulnerable to starvation, disease, and violence. A collective effort is required to ensure stability, humanitarian relief, and a peaceful future for Sudan’s people. The world must prioritize Sudan, ensuring that its citizens have the resources to survive, rebuild, and actively shape their future. By staying informed, spreading awareness, and urging global leaders to take action, we can contribute to the movement for peace and justice.

We thank all students, attendees, and everyone interested in human rights and global peace for participating in this critical discussion. The session was highly interactive, with thought-provoking questions, insightful perspectives, and an engaging exchange of ideas that deepened our collective understanding of Sudan’s crisis. By engaging in conversations about Sudan and advocating for meaningful action, we can amplify the voices of those affected and work toward change. Together, we can help bring attention to a crisis that deserves recognition. Share this blog to spread awareness and urge global leaders to take action.
