The Silent War
Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by a devastating war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). What began as a political dispute escalated into a brutal conflict stretching from Khartoum to Darfur and beyond.
The humanitarian toll is catastrophic: over 270,000 lives lost, 10–12 million displaced, and more than 24 million people facing severe food insecurity. Hospitals have collapsed, rights are systematically violated, and yet the world largely looks away.
One Container, Many Hands
In response to this overlooked crisis, SSAW – Support Survivors of African War – launched the SSSW Project (Support Survivors of Sudan War), a humanitarian aid campaign rooted in decolonial and agroecological principles.
The first goal: to fill and ship a container of life-saving supplies. Thanks to volunteers, donors, and partner organizations, SSAW collected and packed over €65,000 worth of essential goods, including:
Medicines – 107 packages, ~493 kg (donated by Fondazione Banco Farmaceutico ETS, Mediterranea Saving Humans, and others).
Food supplies – 1,704 packages, ~3,100 kg (pasta, flour, rice, tuna, canned goods, chocolate; donated by Caritas, Fondazione Casa della Comunità ETS, Sudanese Association of Turin, and many individual donors).
Non-food items – 92 packages, ~1,000 kg (clothes, blankets, kitchenware, crutches, 7 wheelchairs).
Face masks – 45 packages, ~100 kg (donated by Reale Mutua).
In total, over 6,000 packages of essential medicines, food, and supplies were mobilized.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Global Aid Action – Torino, who fully covered the transport cost of €4,250, and to Mediterranea Saving Humans and Fondazione Banco Farmaceutico ETS for contributing critical health kits for refugee camps in Darfur.
The Humanitarian Route: From Torino to Darfur
On July 2, 2025, Container ID LMCU 118781/6 departed from Torino, reaching Genova five days later. On July 7, it set sail across the Mediterranean, through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea, bound for Port Sudan.
Final destination: Al-Malha, Darfur, where SSAW aims to deliver goods to refugee and IDP reception centers in coordination with Darfur Regional Government, Ministry of Health& Social Welfare and RSDO – Renaissance Sudan for Development Organisation.
Alternative Scenarios
If delivery to Darfur becomes impossible, SSAW has prepared contingency plans:
Kassala (Eastern Sudan) – in partnership with BSVO – Blue Sky Volunteer Organisation.
Cotonou (Benin) route – with overland transport via Cameroon and Chad to reach Darfur.
These adaptive strategies ensure that aid reaches those most in need, even under shifting security conditions.
Field Presence & Global Advocacy
To guarantee transparency and effectiveness, Sara Uboldi and fellow volunteers from Mediterranea Saving Humans will travel at their own expense to Sudan to supervise operations and oversee the container’s distribution.
SSAW also renews its call to the United Nations to establish a permanent contact group to ensure safe, consistent humanitarian access to Sudan.

Campaign in Action: Events & Solidarity
Throughout the campaign, SSAW organized and participated in community events, solidarity gatherings, and fundraising initiatives across Italy and beyond. Volunteers, local associations, and Sudanese diaspora communities worked side by side to collect goods, raise awareness, and keep Sudan’s crisis visible.
Moments of collective effort — from packing days in Torino warehouses to solidarity concerts and public talks — not only mobilized resources but also built bridges of empathy between communities.
